UAE Cybersecurity Council Warns of Public Wi-Fi Risks

The UAE Cybersecurity Council has issued a warning after recording more than 12,000 cases of cyberattacks linked to public Wi-Fi usage in 2025. These incidents account for approximately 35% of all reported cybercrimes in the country during this period.

Hackers are increasingly exploiting unsecured open networks to steal passwords, bank card details, and personal information. Experts emphasized that users should exercise extreme caution when connecting to free Wi-Fi networks in public spaces such as cafes, airports, and shopping malls. Such networks often lack protection, making them vulnerable to fraud, phishing, and malware. Criminals can intercept transmitted data, redirect users to fraudulent websites, or install spyware without the device owner’s knowledge.

To protect against these threats, authorities recommend using reliable VPN applications that encrypt internet connections and ensure secure data transmission. It is also advised to enable the “Safe Browsing” feature in browsers and avoid logging into important accounts—such as online banking or personal email—while connected to public networks.

The council also announced the return of the “Cyber Pulse” campaign, a project aimed at raising awareness about safe internet usage. This initiative focuses on educating citizens and organizations on best practices for digital protection and strengthening national cybersecurity.

As technology continues to evolve rapidly, maintaining vigilance and adopting precautionary measures online remains essential.
