Shaikha Al Nowais Becomes First Female Secretary-General of UN Tourism

In a historic decision, Shaikha Al Nowais from the United Arab Emirates has been officially confirmed as the Secretary-General of the UN World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism). This appointment marks a double milestone, as she becomes both the first representative of the UAE and the first woman to lead the global body in its 50-year history.

Initially elected to the post in May, her appointment was formally ratified by a majority vote of more than 160 member states during the UN Tourism General Assembly in Riyadh. Shaikha Al Nowais is set to lead the organization for the 2026-2029 term, with a strategic focus on fostering inclusivity, promoting sustainability, and driving innovation within the global tourism sector.

In her address, the incoming Secretary-General articulated a vision of tourism that transcends economics. She emphasized that tourism serves as a vital bridge for human connection and a foundational pillar for mutual understanding, peace, and sustainable development worldwide. Her stated goals include developing human capital and creating equal opportunities for youth, women, and local communities, thereby stimulating sustainable growth and cultural exchange.

The UAE’s Minister of Economy and Tourism, Abdalla bin Touq, stated that the election demonstrates international recognition of the country’s standing and strengthens the region’s leading role in advancing sustainable tourism. The organization itself hailed the event as inspirational. The 26th session of the General Assembly, where the appointment was confirmed, was dedicated to formulating measures for sustainable development, environmental protection, and digital transformation within the sector. Shaikha Al Nowais has previously highlighted investment and development priorities in Africa, Latin America, and small island states, asserting that tourism is a powerful engine for job creation, business support, and global economic recovery.
