Abu Dhabi Is Getting Its Own Sphere — and It Could Reshape Yas Island Entertainment
Abu Dhabi is preparing for one of its boldest entertainment projects yet: Sphere Abu Dhabi, a new immersive venue planned for Yas Island with an estimated development cost of $1.7 billion. The project is being developed through a partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and Sphere Entertainment Co., and notably marks the first Sphere venue outside the United States.
Set between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, the future venue will become part of Yas Island’s already expanding entertainment ecosystem. According to the announcement, the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2029, adding another major landmark to one of the UAE’s most high-profile leisure destinations.
For Abu Dhabi, this is more than another large-scale construction story. The move signals a wider ambition to position the emirate as a destination not only for tourism, but for globally relevant cultural and entertainment experiences. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, described the investment as a reflection of the emirate’s long-term vision, built on international partnerships and a commitment to putting Emirati culture, talent, and storytelling on a bigger stage.
Sphere Entertainment also made clear that Abu Dhabi was chosen intentionally. James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment, said the city’s infrastructure, cultural importance, and international standing made it a natural next location, calling the project the beginning of a broader global network of immersive venues.
The venue is expected to host three main categories of events: Sphere Experiences, the company’s signature immersive productions; concert residencies featuring both regional Arabic performers and international acts; and major brand and marquee events, including launches and combat sports. With a flexible capacity of up to 20,000 people, the venue is designed to support multiple formats throughout the year.
One of the most interesting aspects of the project is its cultural dimension. Plans include original Sphere Experiences rooted in Emirati heritage, as well as the display of Emirati artwork on the venue’s iconic Exosphere, the spherical LED exterior that became globally recognizable in Las Vegas. That gives the project a dual identity: entertainment infrastructure with local cultural storytelling built into its concept.
Its location also adds to the strategic appeal. Positioned a short drive from Zayed International Airport, Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to become highly visible during major city moments, including the annual Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, giving it recurring international broadcast exposure.
The project joins a growing wave of destination-defining developments in the emirate, alongside the Saadiyat Cultural District and the planned Disney theme park resort on Yas Island. Once completed, Sphere Abu Dhabi is also expected to create thousands of permanent jobs, while infrastructure coordination is already underway across multiple entities, including Abu Dhabi Mobility, the Department of Energy, Taqa, Etihad Rail, and Aldar.
For Dubai People, the bigger takeaway is clear: the UAE’s entertainment race is entering a new chapter, and Abu Dhabi is making a very public statement about scale, ambition, and global cultural relevance. Sphere Abu Dhabi is not just another venue announcement — it is a signal that Yas Island is evolving into an even more powerful international stage.
