Dubai launches first accredited Bachelor of Music degree

Dubai is expanding its creative education sector with the launch of what is described as the city’s first accredited Bachelor of Music degree, giving aspiring musicians the opportunity to complete a full university-level music programme without leaving the UAE.

The three-year, full-time degree will be offered by SAE University College Dubai from September 2026, with applications now open.

The programme arrives as the UAE continues to strengthen its cultural and creative industries, with a national ambition for the sector to contribute 5 per cent of GDP by 2031.

A new path for aspiring musicians in Dubai

For years, students in the UAE have had access to private music lessons and specialised training, but fewer opportunities to complete a comprehensive, industry-focused bachelor’s degree locally.

The new programme is designed to address that gap.

It will prepare students for a music industry that has changed significantly over the past decade, where careers increasingly extend beyond traditional performance.

Today’s musicians may work across songwriting, music production, electronic music, content creation, artist development and music business.

For Dubai, developing these skills locally could help create a stronger pipeline of musicians, producers, composers, songwriters and creative entrepreneurs.

Modern musicians need business skills too

One of the central ideas behind the degree is that artists increasingly need to understand both creativity and business.

Streaming platforms, social media and independent distribution have made it possible for musicians to manage much more of their careers themselves.

As a result, students will not study only songwriting, performance and production.

The curriculum will also cover artist management, contracts, intellectual property, copyright, social media, marketing and creative business development.

The programme is designed around the reality that modern artists may effectively operate as their own label, distributor and marketing team.

This could be particularly valuable for self-taught musicians who already have creative skills but have limited knowledge of how royalties, rights, contracts and revenue work.

Focus on contemporary music

The programme will differ from more traditional music degrees that place heavy emphasis on classical or instrumental education.

Instead, SAE Dubai plans to focus strongly on contemporary and electronic music, while also exploring connections between music and other industries such as film, gaming and live entertainment.

That approach reflects Dubai’s growing position as a regional centre for concerts, festivals, nightlife, digital media and entertainment.

Students will therefore be trained for a wider range of creative careers rather than being prepared exclusively for traditional performance roles.

Students will work on real projects

Practical experience will form an important part of the degree from the first year.

Students will work in professional-standard studios and use digital audio workstations while developing skills in areas such as production, stagecraft and live music.

As they progress through the programme, they will also work on client briefs and community projects.

During the final year, students will complete industry-based learning and a major production project.

The objective is for graduates to already have experience releasing music, performing and collaborating on professional projects before completing their studies.

The programme has been developed with industry partners including Melody House, Muzikminds and songwriter and producer Miklos Malek.

AI becomes part of music education

Artificial intelligence will also be included in the curriculum as generative and AI-powered tools become increasingly common in songwriting, production and audio engineering.

However, students will first be taught the fundamentals of music theory, songwriting, production techniques and critical listening.

They will then explore emerging creative technologies and computer-assisted tools.

The programme will also address questions surrounding copyright, ownership and originality, which are becoming increasingly important as AI-generated content becomes more common.

The goal is to teach students how to use AI as a creative tool while maintaining their own artistic judgment and individual voice.

How the degree is accredited

The Bachelor of Music will be delivered by SAE University College Dubai, part of SAE University College Australia.

The Australian institution is regulated by the country’s Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency and has degree-awarding authority.

In the UAE, SAE Dubai is licensed by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, and operates within the country’s higher-education quality framework.

The qualification can be attested for use in the UAE and may also be used internationally, depending on the recognition requirements of individual countries, institutions and employers.

Scholarships of up to Dh50,000 available

The first intake is scheduled for September 2026, followed by additional intakes planned for February and May 2027.

While the programme is initially expected to attract a large number of UAE-based students, SAE also hopes to bring in students from across the GCC, the wider Middle East and international markets.

Scholarships and financial support worth up to Dh50,000 are also being offered.

Awards will depend on factors including academic achievement, creative talent and individual eligibility.

Supporting Dubai’s creative economy

The launch of the degree represents more than an expansion of Dubai’s university offering.

It reflects the wider evolution of the emirate’s creative economy.

Dubai is already home to a rapidly growing ecosystem of artists, producers, entertainment companies, venues, festivals and digital creators.

But sustaining that growth requires a strong local talent base.

By combining music, technology, entrepreneurship and real-world industry experience, the new Bachelor of Music programme could help prepare a new generation of creative professionals to build their careers in the UAE rather than having to move abroad for specialist education.
