Dubai Mallathon draws record 160,000 participants and 290 million steps
Dubai has turned some of its busiest indoor spaces into a citywide fitness network, with the second edition of Dubai Mallathon attracting 160,475 participants over three months and generating more than 290 million steps across malls and other major destinations.
Held from June 15 to September 15, 2026, the initiative was organised by the Dubai Sports Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence.
A summer fitness initiative on a record scale
Dubai Mallathon was created around a simple idea: during the hottest months of the year, shopping malls can become more than retail destinations.
Air-conditioned spaces across the city were transformed into walking and running routes, allowing residents and visitors to remain active despite summer temperatures.
The 2026 edition expanded significantly from its first year, attracting professional athletes, amateur runners, beginners and families from different age groups and nationalities.
More Dubai locations joined this year
The second edition extended beyond its original mall network.
Dubai International Airport, Dubai International Financial Centre and Ibn Battuta Mall joined the programme for the first time, alongside established venues including Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Hills Mall, City Centre Mirdif, Dubai Festival City Mall and City Centre Deira.
Dubai International Airport became particularly notable as the first non-mall location to host Mallathon activities, bringing the concept into Terminal 3 and extending it to employees, airport partners and members of the wider community.
A full marathon inside Dubai Mall
The programme was not limited to casual walking.
More than 14 weekly races were organised during the three-month event, culminating in a full 42.195-kilometre marathon inside Dubai Mall.
A 21km half-marathon was also staged at the shopping centre, attracting both experienced athletes and recreational runners.
Dedicated events were also held to mark Emirati Women’s Day, with women of different ages participating in specially organised activities across the initiative.
From 40,000 to more than 160,000 participants
The scale of growth becomes particularly clear when compared with Mallathon’s debut edition.
In 2025, the initiative attracted more than 40,000 people, who collectively recorded over 120 million steps.
That first edition also entered Guinness World Records for the largest mall running event of its kind, with 1,392 runners taking part in a single race at Dubai Hills Mall.
Following that response, Sheikh Hamdan directed that Dubai Mallathon become an annual three-month summer initiative from 2026 onwards.
Turning fitness into part of daily life
For Dubai Sports Council, the significance of Mallathon extends beyond participation numbers.
Khalfan Juma Belhoul, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, said the variety of people taking part demonstrated how sport can connect communities and encourage more residents to become physically active.
The concept is closely aligned with the Dubai Social Agenda 33 and Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, which include goals around healthier lifestyles, wellbeing and stronger communities. The 2026 edition also supported the UAE’s Year of the Family by encouraging families to exercise together.
Dubai turns unusual spaces into places to exercise
One of Mallathon’s most distinctive features is that it does not require people to visit a traditional gym or sports facility.
Instead, exercise is brought into places residents already use every day.
Shopping centres, financial districts and even an international airport became part of the programme, making physical activity easier to incorporate into daily routines.
Participation was free, with visitors able to collect wristbands at participating locations and access dedicated walking and running areas.
A new summer tradition for Dubai
What began as a one-month experiment in 2025 has now developed into one of Dubai’s largest community fitness programmes.
With more than 160,000 people participating and hundreds of millions of steps recorded in just three months, the second Dubai Mallathon demonstrated that the city’s summer does not necessarily have to mean putting outdoor-style activity on hold.
By turning familiar indoor destinations into spaces for running, walking and community sport, Dubai has created a model that combines fitness with the infrastructure already built into everyday city life.
