Sheikh Khaled visits Greece as UAE announces €15 billion investment plan

The UAE plans to invest a further €15 billion in Greece, expanding an economic partnership that has already supported transactions in energy and healthcare.

The announcement came during Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s official visit to Greece on October 22, when the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi met Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens.

The new plan builds on a €4 billion joint investment initiative launched in May 2022, creating scope for further projects across sectors of interest to both countries.

Discussions at the Prime Minister’s Office focused on strengthening cooperation in energy, infrastructure, healthcare and advanced technology.

The meeting brought the investment announcement into a broader conversation about the relationship between the two countries and the areas in which they want to work more closely.

Sheikh Khaled and Mitsotakis also discussed regional and international developments, emphasising the importance of security, peace and stability.

Earlier, Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis welcomed Sheikh Khaled at Athens International Airport.

Building on the 2022 investment initiative

The original joint initiative established a framework for identifying and developing strategic investments.

Since its launch, that framework has helped bring significant transactions in energy and healthcare to completion. The additional €15 billion plan extends the partnership’s ambition beyond those existing projects.

Its stated objectives include supporting sustainable economic growth and strengthening the competitiveness of both economies through cooperation in established and emerging sectors.

Greece’s location adds to its appeal

The UAE identified Greece’s economic strengths and strategic location as important reasons for pursuing further investment.

Its position connecting European markets with regional and international markets was highlighted alongside opportunities for major projects and long-term partnerships.

That rationale gives the announcement a wider perspective: the relationship combines investment opportunities within Greece with the country’s role in connecting businesses and markets across borders.

A broader agenda for economic cooperation

The Athens visit places renewed attention on the practical development of the UAE–Greece partnership.

Energy and healthcare provide an existing foundation, while the discussions on infrastructure and advanced technology point to additional areas for collaboration.

The €15 billion announcement sets out the scale of the next investment ambition, building on a framework that has been developing since 2022 and now forms a central part of the two countries’ economic relationship.
