Abu Dhabi Named One of the Top 5 Smartest Cities in the World
Abu Dhabi has earned a spot among the world’s five smartest cities, according to the latest IMD Smart City Index for 2025. The capital of the United Arab Emirates rose to fifth place after ranking tenth last year, outpacing many other global cities in the process. This steady climb reflects Abu Dhabi’s ongoing commitment to innovation, sustainability, and high-quality urban living.
The city’s progress has been consistent over the past five years, moving from 14th place in 2020 to its current top-five position. Officials attribute this success to a well-planned, multi-faceted approach to development. Key factors include an efficient public transportation network, abundant green spaces, and widespread digital accessibility—all of which contribute to residents’ high satisfaction levels.
Public transportation has been a major focus, with over 90 million bus trips recorded in the past year alone. The city’s water transport network also served more than 168,000 passengers during the same period. Investments in transport infrastructure reached 3.4 billion dirhams in 2024, helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve mobility. Surveys indicate that more than 80% of residents are satisfied with the public transport system, and most do not consider traffic a significant problem.
Abu Dhabi has also prioritized sustainability and quality of life through urban greenery. Approximately 84% of residents expressed contentment with the city’s parks and green spaces, which have expanded significantly. In 2024, over 200 new public areas were developed, offering more recreational options and enhancing the city’s appeal.
Another critical factor in Abu Dhabi’s high ranking is its extensive free Wi-Fi coverage, available in buses, parks, and beaches through the Hala Wi-Fi service. Nearly 75% of survey participants identified this as an essential feature of the city’s digital infrastructure, making connectivity seamless for both residents and visitors.
With its balanced approach to technology, transport, and sustainability, Abu Dhabi continues to set an example for smart cities worldwide. Its rise in global rankings demonstrates how strategic planning and investment can significantly improve urban living standards. The city’s achievements position it as a model for other rapidly developing urban centers aiming to combine innovation with livability.
